Hawthorne Flag Bearer at Games
Posted By Dale Clifford , Examiner Staff Writer
Kawartha Trent Synchro Club 11-12 coach Dani Smith wants her young team to enjoy the experience of competing in their first Ontario Winter Games.
The team, comprising of Myranda Hawthorne, Sarah Curtin, Nathalie Heyden, Madison MacDonald, Hailey Paget, Katherine Scheuermann and Miranda Stever, compete in the Games in Huntsville Thursday to Sunday.
They qualified at the East Trials in Nepean at the end of January, placing first in routine and second in championship (combination of figures and routine marks).
"I'm excited and nervous but I know it will be a really good experience for them," said the 26-year-old Smith, who hails from Lakefield and is in her second year as a KTSC coach. "It will be great because it coincides with the Olympics and I want them to be part of the experience. There is an athletes village and nine teams from different regions (in synchro swim-m i n g). I really want them to have good swims and have fun."
It is extra special for 11-year-old Hawthorne, daughter of Bryan and Natalie Hawthorne. She will be the flag bearer for Synchro Ontario at the opening ceremonies.
Smith said the club was selected for the honour by random draw then the team voted for Hawthorne.
"I'm really excited and it's an honour," said Myranda, who has an older sister in 1 3 -y e a r-o l d Sydney and younger sibling in eight year-old
Robyn, both club swimmers as well.
"There is a feeling of pride to do it."
She said she and her teammates are looking forward to the whole experience.
"We did well in Nepean because we really wanted to go," she said.
"We tried our hardest and did the best we could. We are really happy to be there (Winter Games) and be part of it. This is really huge. It's exciting for all of us.
"We do well because we work well together and we are good friends out of the pool. We practice hard and come prepared. Hopefully we will do well."
The team swims to upbeat musical themes from the Mission Impossible, Pink Panther, Peter Gunn and James Bond movies.
They are also tested on land, with land drilling, which is almost like swimming on land with emphasis on arm movement, and splits, which involves more of the legs, Smith said.
"I want the girls to represent our club well and enjoy it," Smith said.
"It's a chance for team bonding and meeting new people."
Smith swam for the Kawartha club for 11 straight years and was in Thunder Bay for four years before returning here.
"I love the water and I love to coach," she said with a laugh. "I like to plan out the routines and it's a chance to be more creative."
Hawthorne said she loved everything about the sport.
"Swimming is just fun to do and I like it because it is a team sport," she said.
